What is HIV? Can you live a healthy life with it?
- HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
- HIV can be categorized into three stages: Acute HIV Infection, Chronic HIV Infection (also known as Latency Stage), and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The immune system comprises various cells that protect the host’s body against pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. One such cell amongst immune cells is CD4 cells. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) majorly infects the CD4 cells in the immune system. In chronic HIV individuals or poor ART adherent patients or weakened resistant patients, CD4 cell numbers gradually drop, eventually leading to impaired immune response or weakened immune state of the body. If no action has been taken to improve CD4 recovery, it adversely affects the immune response, cannot fight against infections and adds more difficulty to ailing patients.
CD4 count is a test that measures the number of CD4 cells in your blood. A CD4 count is used to check the immune system’s health in HIV-infected patients.
There are three types of tests available: nucleic acid tests (NAT), antibody tests, and antigen tests (DNA-RNA PCR Test). This test is used to detect the genetic material of a virus RNA or DNA in the blood, Some viruses have RNA as genetic material, and some have DNA. For example, coronavirus has RNA as genetic material, and hepatitis B virus has DNA. In a PCR test, even if a minuscule amount of genetic material of a particular virus is present, it can be detected, so the most advanced and sensitive test is to see the presence of any virus at a very early stage.
As mentioned above, HIV consists of both types of genetic material (RNA and DNA) in the bloodstream and cell, respectively, when the virus is present in the blood. The genetic material is in the form of RNA, but when it enters the cell for multiplication, it converts RNA genetic material into DNA (in the structure of pro-viral DNA). To detect the presence of RNA genetic material in blood and DNA genetic material of the developing viruses in the cell, both RNA-PCR and DNA-PCR tests are done to detect the presence of HIV in a patient. During the screening at an early stage, if DNA-PCR comes to be at “Not Detected Level,” that means there is “No presence of virus in the blood of a person.” PCR test is critical to detect the presence of HIV virus in a person at an early stage. (the Window Period for DNA PCR test is about 72 hours, the period after which the test report comes accurately)
